Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
